The ZANU PF Politburo on Wednesday unanimously endorsed President Mnangagwa to remain party President and First Secretary beyond 2028 in a rubber-stamping move that signals further doom for his ambitious deputy.

The information was relayed during a Thursday press conference by Zanu PF Secretary for Information and Publicity Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa.

Mutsvangwa said all Politburo members agreed on the decision.

He said this will ensure stability and continuity in the country.

“The previous two Politburo meetings were subsequent to the passage of the CAB 3 Bill, which is now an Act, CAA3.

“It is of note that the genie is out of the bottle.

“When I say the genie is out of the bottle, I mean the story of Zimbabwe’s success is now on the global stage.

In a subtle admission of internal differences Mutsvangwa said many people did not expect the party to manage the issue peacefully.

“People were anxious about whether we would handle this issue of a smooth handover within ZANU PF of the political systems.

He admitted that there was anxiety as 2028 was approaching.

“Would Zimbabweans hold their act together so that the country remains focused and steadfast?”

Mutsvangwa commended the passage of CAA3 as the mechanism that made it easy.

“We are now very confident as a country about the certainty of leadership.

While CAA3 was whispered to be a “coup” against Mnangagwa’s ambitious deputy, Chiwenga, the attendant steps have served to reinforce the factuality of the plot.

The postponement of internal elections, resolutions by Provinces to continue until 2030 and the latest Politburo decision have all effectively shut the door for Chiwenga.

For now.

The former Army head has been deftly and continuously outsmarted by the more politically experienced Mnangagwa.

Multiple plots, rumoured to have his backing, have collapsed time and again.

However, publicly Chiwenga has continued to reaffirm his support for Mnangagwa.
