HARARE — Chimurenga music legend Thomas Mapfumo has arrived in Zimbabwe ahead of his scheduled performances at singer Jah Prayzah’s wedding and businessman Wicknell Chivayo’s birthday celebrations.

The 81-year-old music icon was reportedly offered a combined US$1 million for the two performances.

Videos circulating on social media show Zanu-PF members welcoming Mapfumo, including Zimbabwe’s Minister of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, Tinotenda Machakaire, and the Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Monica Mutsvangwa.

Mapfumo, who has spent years based in the United States, is regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s most influential musicians and a leading figure in the development of chimurenga music.

His announced return sparked debate among fans, especially considering his long-standing criticism of the ruling Zanu-PF party regarding corruption and misgovernance.

However, Mapfumo was quick to clarify that his performance had nothing to do with politics and that he was being compensated for his services.

The performances are expected to bring together prominent figures from Zimbabwe’s political, business and entertainment circles.
