HARARE — Presidential adviser to President Emmerson Mnangagwa Paul Tungwarara says he will continue using helicopters despite calls for him and others to reconsider the mode of transport following the death of businessman Wicknell Chivayo in a helicopter crash.

Tungwarara, who was a close associate of Chivayo, made the remarks while travelling by helicopter to Mberengwa, saying he would not allow fear following the fatal accident to dictate his choices.

“For those who are saying we should not fly with choppers because one of our friends Wicknell Chivayo died in a helicopter crash, we are not going to stop flying with helicopters because we are honouring Wicknell,” Tungwarara said.

His comments come days after Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke and other passengers died when their helicopter crashed in the Marondera area on September 30.

The accident has prompted widespread mourning across Zimbabwe and renewed public discussion about the safety of helicopter travel.

“We are not going to stop buying choppers and flying with choppers; we are moving on. Don’t frighten us,” Tungwarara added.

The presidential adviser made it clear that Chivayo’s death will not see him abandon helicopters.

He said the decision was also a way of honouring his late friend.

Tungwarara’s remarks come as tributes continue to pour in for Chivayo, a prominent and controversial businessman known for his close relationships with influential figures both locally and regionally.
