Rwandan President Paul Kagame has thanked his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, for congratulating Rwanda on securing a 10-year agreement to host the Formula 1 African Grand Prix.

Ramaphosa, writing on behalf of the South African government and people, congratulated Rwanda on the deal and offered South Africa’s support as the country prepares to host the prestigious motorsport event at the planned Bugesera circuit from the early 2030s.

“Thank you, my dear brother, President @CyrilRamaphosa, for your warm congratulations and offer of support,” Kagame responded.

“We look forward to working with you and all who share this vision as we make this a truly African Grand Prix in every way possible and take motorsport to new heights on our continent.”

Ramaphosa said the agreement recognised Rwanda’s capabilities and Africa’s more broadly, describing the Grand Prix as an opportunity to raise the continent’s profile on the global sporting stage.

He noted that South Africa, which hosted the first Formula 1 Grand Prix on African soil in 1993, would be willing to share its experience and expertise.

The South African leader also pointed to Rwanda’s growing portfolio of international sporting events, including the Tour du Rwanda cycling race.

“You are in pole position to make all of Africa proud and take motorsport to new heights,” Ramaphosa said.

Rwanda’s planned Grand Prix is expected to bring Formula 1 back to Africa, with the proposed Bugesera circuit set to become the centrepiece of the country’s preparations.

The exchange between the two leaders signals an offer of regional cooperation as Rwanda works to establish the race as a major event for the continent.
