Victoria Falls – British billionaire businessman James Ratcliffe has praised Zimbabwe’s hospitality, scenery and wildlife after choosing the country to celebrate his 74th birthday at Victoria Falls.
Ratcliffe, who spent his birthday playing golf, described the experience as “glorious”, saying the friendly people, pleasant weather, and magnificent natural surroundings made the occasion special.
“My birthday is today, and we’ve chosen Zimbabwe for my birthday, and it’s been glorious,” he said.
He praised the golf course, describing it as magnificent and highlighting the trees, scenery and tranquillity of the surroundings.
“The scenery was magnificent, and it’s very quiet. Not many people here,” Ratcliffe said, adding that the people he had encountered were courteous and friendly.
He also singled out the wildlife on the golf course, saying the presence of impala and warthogs had added to the experience.
For Ratcliffe, the appeal of golf lies partly in the opportunity to visit interesting destinations and experience different courses.
He said Zimbabwe stood out because of its natural beauty and welcoming atmosphere.
“The people have been lovely, the weather’s fantastic, apart from one tree which I hit with my golf ball,” he joked.
Ratcliffe said his birthday celebrations would continue with visits to Hwange National Park and Mana Pools, expressing confidence that the rest of the week would be equally enjoyable.
He also praised the quality of the coffee and the friendliness of the people he had met during his stay.
“That’s why I love Zimbabwe,” he said.
According to Forbes, James Ratcliffe, whose net worth is estimated at $17.6 billion, is the founder, chairman and majority owner of London-based chemical giant Ineos Group, which produces a wide range of products, from synthetic oils and plastics to solvents used in medicines.
Ineos has expanded into the shale gas, oil and gas and petrochemical sectors while also acquiring a $1.5 billion stake in British football club Manchester United.
