Rehabilitation of the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road is underway, with all eight contractors back on site and each targeting at least 20 kilometres of work by December 2026, Information Ministry Permanent Secretary Nick Mangwana has said.
Mangwana said 73.4 kilometres had been rehabilitated so far, as the government steps up monitoring of progress, work quality and compliance with project requirements.
In a post on X, he said work was being carried out in phases, including bush clearing, detour construction, earthworks, drainage installation, surfacing and road widening.
He said the government remained committed to completing the project, although the rehabilitation would take time.
The road is a key transport link connecting Bulawayo, Hwange and Victoria Falls.
Its rehabilitation is expected to improve road safety, reduce travel time and strengthen connectivity between the three centres.
Mangwana said the journey currently takes about 15 hours, underscoring the need to improve the condition of the route.
The project is also expected to facilitate the movement of people and goods while supporting tourism and economic activity along the corridor.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution when travelling through construction zones as rehabilitation works continue.
The rehabilitation has resumed after motorists expressed concern about the road’s poor condition, which serves as a vital link to Victoria Falls, a major tourist destination.
