HARARE – The Netherlands has announced changes to its worldwide diplomatic network, including the planned closure of the embassy in Harare.

We recognise that this is significant news for our partners and friends in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, given the many strong relationships we have built over the years.

The decision is part of a broader restructuring of the Netherlands’ diplomatic network and does not change our appreciation for the close ties or our commitment to working with the respective governments and other partners and across the region.

We are focused on ensuring a careful transition towards closure and continued cooperation with our networks in the period ahead.

The Dutch government said the decision was part of efforts to adapt its diplomatic presence to changing geopolitical circumstances and determine where its interests can best be served.

In a statement, the Netherlands acknowledged the significance of the planned closure for its partners and friends in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, citing the strong relationships built across the region over the years.

“The decision is part of a broader restructuring of the Netherlands’ diplomatic network,” the statement said, stressing that it does not change the country’s appreciation for its close ties or its commitment to working with the respective governments and other partners.

The Netherlands said it would focus on ensuring a careful transition towards the closure while maintaining cooperation with its networks in the region.

According to the Dutch government, its interests in countries where missions are being closed will be promoted by embassies in neighbouring countries.

The Harare embassy is among several missions being closed under the restructuring, alongside embassies in Tripoli, Bujumbura and Yangon, as well as the consulate-general in Rio de Janeiro.

The Netherlands currently operates 113 embassies and 27 consulates-general worldwide.
