Zimbabwe | Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has questioned the government’s accountability following a horrific road accident on the Harare-Chivhu highway that claimed at least 27 lives.

The fatal crash occurred on Friday night when a commuter minibus carrying members of an apostolic church collided head-on with a haulage truck on the Harare-Chivhu highway.

The tragedy is the latest in a series of deadly road accidents in Zimbabwe, fuelling concerns over the state of the country’s roads and the effectiveness of government efforts to improve road safety.

Chamisa condemned the loss of life and called on the government to take responsibility and provide answers over the continued occurrence of what he described as preventable tragedies.

“Almost every week, Zimbabweans are confronted by preventable tragedy and suffering,” Chamisa said in a statement posted on social media.

“Where is the urgency? Where is the accountability?”

The latest crash comes just days after the deadly Kariba ferry disaster, adding to growing public concern over safety and government accountability.

The outrage has also been heightened by recent government-sanctioned demolitions of homes belonging to ordinary citizens, with critics questioning the authorities’ priorities and approach to protecting citizens.
