We asked readers across six cities to nominate the restaurant that gets sadza right — properly stiff, not the softened version served to please a wider palate — and compiled the results into a reader-sourced map spanning London, Johannesburg, Sydney, Toronto, Stockholm and New York.

Unsurprisingly, the top nominations were rarely the most visible restaurants; several of the highest-rated spots operate out of converted garages or takeaway counters attached to African grocery stores, running almost entirely on word of mouth within the community.

One recurring theme in the submissions: the litmus test isn't the sadza alone, but whether the muriwo and the meat are cooked the way a specific reader's mother or grandmother made them — a bar that, readers were quick to point out, very few restaurants clear.
